Meet Rogers Omondi, a Maisha Trust educational scholarship beneficiary. He hails from the harsh environments of Kibera slums, living in a single room together with his mother and two siblings. Life hasn’t been a bed of roses for him. Despite of all the challenges that he has faced as a young man from a poverty stricken background, Rogers has proved that through focus, determination and sheer hard work, anyone can achieve their goals in life. Last year, he sat for his KCSE examinations and managed to score an impressive B+.
I sat with him about two weeks ago to find out what he wanted to do in future. He informed me that he wants to be an electrical engineer. Rogers is clearly a soft-spoken and somewhat shy young man, but one thing that can’t escape you when you interact with him, is the determination projected through his eyes. “I just want a better life for my family, to take them out of the slums”, he said as we concluded our meeting. Now we are seeking for funds, potential scholarships for him to advance to university so that he can realize his dream in life. A dream that the rest of his family members have anchored to as their only life line.
